At Camp Temagami, we know what makes a summer great are the people you spend it with. But we also know that organizing and supervising these trips takes a lot of work, and that’s why we have an experienced management team and group of guides. Their canoe tripping skill and training is second only to their passion for the job, for the outdoors, and for their campers’ safety.
Nick Georgiade
Camp Director
Nick first set foot on the island as a camper in 1991. He progressed through the tripping program and had his own thirty-two day trip of a lifetime on the Albany River in 1995. Nick returned to Camp Temagami as a guide after earning a B.A. in Business Administration from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
Nick has paddled over 8,000 km across some of Canada’s most picturesque wilderness. His travels with the camp include five trips to James Bay, two long trips in Labrador, two trips on the Coulonge River, two trips on the Spanish River, and numerous trips throughout the Temagami area.
Nick has experience working with youth in the field as a Camp Temagami guide and teaching young adults in the classroom. He has earned Masters degrees in Economics and Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management from North Carolina State University. In conjunction with his studies, Nick has taught university classes in economics and outdoor recreation leadership.
Nick became a Camp Temagami Owner in 2015. He spends 4 months in Temagami each camping season and works full-time during the off-season in Raleigh, North Carolina as the Camp Temagami Director.
Andy MacMillan
Island Caretaker
Andy guided his first canoe trip with Camp Temagami in 1989, and he has been guiding annually since 2000. His favourite thing about guiding is the freedom of exploring wilderness routes with young people, and his favourite trip meal is ham steaks, with Clam Bacon Alfredo coming in a close second place. He can usually be found outdoors: fishing in the fall, and skiing, dogsledding, and playing and coaching hockey in the winter. He hasn’t kept track of the kilometers he’s paddled, but it has been thousands.
Hugh Stewart
Canoe Expert
He started paddling in the 1950’s, guiding in the 1960’s, recanvassing canoes in the 1970’s and building in the 1980’s. He continues to travel in Northern Canada each summer. His 50 years of practical experience in widely varying terrain is invaluable in canoe selection, building and maintenance. Hugh spends his summers at Camp Temagami, helping shepherd campers and staff into the stunning Temagami backcountry.

Guides
We know great Guides make summer experiences special. All of our Guides are with us because they are passionate about experiential education, they relate well to young people, and they are committed to providing a safe, fun, and valuable wilderness experience for all of our participants. Most Guides start out as young campers in our canoe-tripping program.

The journey from camper to Guide occurs over multiple summers. Each subsequent summer, campers take on additional responsibility within their trip groups. They develop strong canoe tripping skills, gain character and strong leadership qualities, and mature into principled adults with sound decision making and problem solving. After completing a 6-week expedition, campers officially begin their apprenticeship as Assistant Guides. Typically, campers who become Assistant Guides and Guides spend 10 summers or more honing their craft. The low turnover rate provides consistent program quality and demonstrates how truly special the experience is!

We occasionally hire Guides from outside our camp community. We require wilderness first aid and water safety certifications for all trip staff applicants and prefer applicants with swift water certifications. If you are interested in joining our team please send us a resume. We are an equal opportunity employer.
